This week s Rewind is another edition of the monthly feature
Years Ago. This time all of the short stories, old photos and memories are based on the decade of the 1980 s.
A great time in the history of Canadian harness racing and for that matter wherever else it was staged. Fans were attending races in large numbers, many new people were becoming involved and above all horses were travelling at speeds previously thought to be impossible.

In this week s edition of Rewind Robert Smith takes readers back to the Golden Age of harness racing at the two major Raceways in Montreal. The weekly action, the intensity of competition and the level of talent both human and equine was virtually without parallel. He recalls some special happenings from way back when, and hopes this rekindles memories for those who remember and also shows what a great racing mecca both Blue Bonnets and Richelieu Park once were.
This week s piece takes the form of three separate short stories from the circa 1960 era along with a few old photos that accompany each one. These recaps help to illustrate the high level of racing that was being conducted in Montreal at this time and for many years following.

Robert J. Key, one of the Standardbred sport’s most influential breeders, most notably through his horse American Winner, passed Wednesday morning (Jan. 27), in Pennsylvania.
Key bred American Winner in partnership with the late John Glesmann and the colt won the 1993 Hambletonian. As a sire, American Winner leaves a legacy through his daughter Yankee Blondie, the dam of Muscle Hill.
American Winner was a son of Super Bowl and the Speedy Somolli mare BJs Pleasure. Key and Glesmann purchased BJs Pleasure as a yearling from breeder Lana Lobell Farms. The following year Lana Lobell sold her half-brother, Mack Lobell.
