Anti-Nuclear Waste Dump signs vandalized across South Bruce

Article content Vandals have attacked signage installations for Protect Our Waterways No Nuclear Waste (POW-NNW) across several locations around South Bruce. The vandals used chainsaws to destroy the signs and, in some cases, cut telephone lines. The signs had been placed on the properties of residents who are opposed to the NWMO’s plans to build a deep landfill site for Canada’s 58,000 tonnes of nuclear waste in their community. “We will not be intimidated by those that seek to silence us through acts of vandalism and violence,” said Michelle Stein, President, POW-NNW. “This only serves to strengthen our resolve to resist NWMO’s proposed nuclear waste dump. CoreCivic asks Leavenworth County to take over detention center

The Leavenworth Times Officials with CoreCivic are proposing that the county government take over the operations of the company’s Leavenworth Detention Center. The idea is being proposed as a way to keep the local facility open following a presidential executive order that prohibits the U.S Department of Justice from contracting with privately-operated detention centers. Under the proposal, CoreCivic would retain ownership of the the Leavenworth Detention Center property, which would be leased by the county. Damon Hininger, president and CEO of CoreCivic, reviewed the proposal Wednesday with Leavenworth County commissioners. He acknowledged there are still a lot of “what ifs” associated with the proposal.
