UWSP Wausau, Marshfield to Restart Intercollegiate Athletics This Fall

WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — UWSP-Wausau athletics will be competing in a new league beginning this fall following a one-year hiatus due to COVID-19. Officials from three University of Wisconsin campuses announced the creation of the Wisconsin Competitive Sports League, which will begin play in September with seven institutions including UWSP Wausau and Marshfield. “The seven of us are going to compete in a conference schedule with eligibility for some non-conference play,” said Bill Gibbs, the head men’s basketball coach and Athletic Director for UWSP Wausau. “We’re just excited to get it back.” In addition to the Marshfield and Wausau schools, the three branch campuses of UW Green Bay (Sheboygan, Manitowoc, and Marinette) and Oshkosh (Fond du Lac, Fox Cities) will also participate, giving the league seven members. The remaining two-year UW campuses such as Barron County and Baraboo have not been included in the initial alignment, but Gibbs says the hope

Westhead: Judge terminates Montador family lawsuit against NHL, leaving room for new litigation

A U.S. federal court judge has terminated a five-year-old wrongful death lawsuit filed by the father of the late Steve Montador, which alleged the National Hockey League has promoted violence and profited off of it while not adequately advising players of the risks of repeated long-term brain injuries. In a Nov. 24 order, Judge John Z. Lee wrote that he was granting in part and denying in part the NHL’s motion for summary judgment in the case. While Lee wrote in his 15-page order that some claims made by Montador’s father, Paul, were completely preempted by the NHL’s collective labour agreement with the NHLPA, which directs players with medical-related grievances to pursue private arbitration, he also wrote that several claims can still be pursued by Paul Montador in state court.
