Women s Weekend Watch: NCAA First & Second Round Preview, Part I

Thursday May 13th, 2021 10:00am (Photo Courtesy: Dave Anderson)  We made it! After months of wondering whether the 2021 season would even happen, the powers that be figured it out. The student-athletes and coaches stayed as safe and healthy as possible under unprecedented circumstances (can we retire that phrase soon?). And now, we’ve arrived at May Madness.  Choosing the 29-team field involved some unprecedented (sorry) discussions. The Big Ten only played conference opponents. Some teams played 11 or 12 games while others got in 16 or more. And the bracket isn’t without controversy (Duke at No. 7? No Penn State?). But that’s all pundit-speak. Over the next three weekends, teams will settle scores between the lines. Here’s (half of) what to watch for this weekend.

UConn Just Going to Keep Fighting in NCAA Tournament

Thu May 13 2021 | Ella Brockway | College PHOTO COURTESY OF UCONN ATHLETIC COMMUNICATIONS Lia LaPrise is a true feeder and catalyst for the UConn offense. When UConn players sat down to watch the Selection Show on Sunday, they knew they were sitting right on the bubble. The Huskies tallied a 12-6 record this season, with a program-record seven Big East wins, but a loss in their conference title game knocked away their chance at an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. The players, gathered at the house of some of the team’s seniors to watch live on ESPNU, felt a sense of uncertainty about how the night would go. But by the time the bracket announcement came around and UConn was revealed as an at-large selection, that feeling turned to joy.

Maryland men s lacrosse vs No 4 Rutgers Preview

Photo courtesy of Maryland Athletics As the case has been with every passing week this season, a new, tougher challenger awaits for No. 3 Maryland men’s lacrosse. No. 4 Rutgers may be the perfect barometer for the Terps’ true ability this season. With experience coupled with promising youthful talent, it’s likely the Scarlet Knights are the equal opposition the Terps have had yet to face this season. Regardless, for Maryland, the sentiment remains: win and it’s on to the next one. “We just gotta focus on ourselves, clean up mistakes and play our game and I think we’ll do well,” senior midfielder Alex Smith said.
