attorney in chicago john lausch, another trump appointee, to pursue a preliminary investigation. while that probe was under way, more documents discovered. on december 20th, president biden s personal counsel informed mr. lausch that additional documents bearing classification markings were identified in the garage of the president s private residence in wilmington, delaware. the fbi went to the location and secured those documents. reporter: and then this morning, the president s personal attorney notified the justice department that one more classified document had turned up at the president s home. garland telling reporters that by then, lausch had already recommended that he appoint a special counsel. today, the president on the defensive. mr. president, mr president, classified classified material next to your corvette? what were you thinking? let me i m going get a chance to speak on all this, god willing, soon. but as i said earlier this week, people and by the way
surprised at the discovery. still, he faces serious questions ahead, as the country now witnesses two investigations at once. our chief justice correspondent pierre thomas leading us off tonight. reporter: tonight, president biden finding himself the subject of a full-scale criminal investigation by his own justice department into his handling of classified documents once he left the obama administration. i m here today to announce the appointment of robert hur as a special counsel. it was in the public interest to appoint a special counsel. reporter: hur is a veteran prosecutor, most recently the u.s. attorney for the state of maryland, appointed by former president trump. this appointment underscores for the public the department s commitment to both independence and accountability. reporter: the attorney general spelling out the timeline of the case. on november 2nd, biden s attorneys discovered classified documents at biden s former office at a washington think-tank. they
soaring inflation is in retreat. december marking the first monthly decline in prices in nearly three years. down by a 0.1% from november. signs of relief hailed by president biden. it s coming down in america month after month, giving families some real breathing room. reporter: compared to a year ago, the rate of inflation is now 6.5%. the vast improvement from last summer s peak driven by falling gas and used car prices. going from 9% to 6.5% really is a big deal. and that s good for the economy. reporter: but experts caution keep in mind that prices are still elevated. reporter: and burdensome for budgets. for the same items, the typical household shelled out $371 more per month than in 2021. it s really expensive. reporter: key categories like rent and groceries continue to hit families where it hurts. eggs soaring a staggering 60%, pressured in part by a record outbreak of the avian flu. are you feeling any improvement?
