Canefarmers want $20 per tonne for their fourth cane payment that is due this month, says National Farmers Union (NFU) general secretary Mahendra Chaudhry.
“Farmers would like to know how much to expect so they can plan their expenditure accordingly,” Mr Chaudhry said.
He said with harvesting to begin next month, farmers wanted this payment to prepare themselves.
“These are among a number of issues affecting the wellbeing of the canefarmers that need to be actioned before the commencement of the 2021 harvesting season.
“The current Covid-related restrictions placed on the movement of people are likely to impact negatively on harvesting and transportation of cane to the mills, if these are to extend into the crushing season.

A GROUP of farmers in Tavua say they will not harvest their cane if they don’t receive a $20 per tonne fourth cane payment in May.
The growers met National Federation Party leader Professor Biman Prasad at Dramasi, Tavua, on Thursday last week and collectively agreed not to harvest as a last resort.
Speaking on behalf of the farmers, Narendra Reddy said growers were “living the life of a poor person” and wanted to be heard.
“There are farmers here who have no money to prepare for the 2021 crushing season,” he said.
