(Photo Provided) WHEELING The West Virginia School Building Authority announced Monday that Ohio County Schools will receive the remaining $18 million it was promised for the school district’s school property improvement projects. The amount represents the final two installments of $27 million the SBA had verbally committed in 2018 toward $76 million in planned property improvements across Ohio County Schools. The SBA contribution had been contingent on voters passing a $42.2 million bond levy, which occurred in May 2018.

Units were dispatched to a reported structure fire at a Nonneeaug Road home and found “extremely heavy smoke” that had pushed through the basement to the first floor, officials said. About 40 firefighters responded. East Litchfield Fire Chief Mark Cattey, who is also the school resource officer at the Bethlehem Elementary School, responded to the house from the school and was able to shut all the doors of the house. Fire officials said this limited ventilation and controlled the fire spread as crews were responding.

City of Hickory crews responded to the scene making repairs, with completion expected within four to five hours. Bethlehem Elementary School and West Alexander Middle School were both affected by the outage.

From STAFF REPORTS The student winners from the Project on Racism Contest and 37th Annual Poster Competition, sponsored by the Herbert Henderson Office of Minority Affairs, includes several students from the Northern Panhandle. The Project on Racism Contest was presented by the Martin Luther King Jr. State Holiday Commission and the YWCA Wheeling. Entries were accepted for essays, music, and five-minute films and was open to any student from grades 1-12 attending public, private, parochial, or home school in West Virginia. “The young people in our state have creativity and passion,” said HHOMA Executive Director and Martin Luther King Jr. State Holiday Commission Chair Jill Upson. “We are honored to take part in recognizing them, what they have to say and what they have achieved.”

The decision was spurned by advisory committee suggestions and escalating COVID case numbers in the region. School Board Chair Kim Koprowski said, We are considering this as a precautionary measure. Since the last time we voted, the rates in New Hampshire have gone up and the contact-tracing ability has gone down, and that s what our advisory committee was looking at when they made the recommendation that got us here today.
