Hi, and welcome to the 8 to 3 newsletter. I’m Laura Newberry, a reporter on the education team, and I’m filling in for the vacationing Sonja Sharp.
In the summer of 2020, it was unclear when public schools in Southern California might reopen. At the same time, we were also learning more about how COVID-19 is spread.
We knew by then that we were far less likely to contract the virus outdoors. So as many of us pondered how K-12 education might resume as the pandemic raged on, there seemed to be one obvious solution: Teach kids outside.
Members of the public will be able to visually immerse themselves in two of the best-known lakes in the United States, thanks to a $2.3 million grant from the National Science Foundation to UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center. The three-year grant will be used to develop three-dimensional visualization technology to enhance public understanding and stewardship of freshwater lake ecosystems and earth-science processes. The project will directly reach some 400,000 visitors to Lake Tahoe in California and Nevada, and Lake Champlain in Vermont and New York.
The project s collaborators hope it will serve as a global prototype for lake and watershed education.

the scheduled opening on labor day. reporter: and we re live on the bridge where there are no more humane toll takers. we ll tell you what you can expect as you drive across it. well, good morning. i m dave clark. i m tori campbell. it s wednesday, march 27th. we re following developing news in san francisco that we first told you about at 4:30. firefighters are still cleaning up after an early-morning fire on third and mckinnon in the bayview district. tara moriarty is there. and tara, some residents say this fire was intentionally set? reporter: that s what they believe. they say the landlord had an ongoing dispute with one of the tenants. you can see there s a huge chunk of it missing over there which is right above a bar. the witnesses describe how a burned kitchen mat somehow got into a garbage chute between these two buildings which is where the fire appeared to have started. firefighters are still here manning hot spots from a fire that broke out six hours ag
