Lawmakers on Capitol Hill are one step closer to getting reparations for New Mexicans affected by the detonation of the first atomic bomb at the Trinity Site 78 years ago.
The Trinity test site was chosen, in part, for its supposed remove from human inhabitation. Yet nearly half-a-million people were living within a 150-mile radius of the explosion, with some as close as 12 miles away. None were warned or evacuated by the US government ahead of time.

Navajo student invited to President Biden’s address to Congress

When President Joe Biden delivers his first address to Congress, a young citizen of the Navajo Nation will be there as a special guest.
Virtually, that is. Heleen Archuleta, a 16-year-old student from New Mexico, is attending the speech on Wednesday as the invited guest of Sen. Ben Ray Luján (D-New Mexico).
“Heleen is an example of the potential of New Mexico’s youth. She’s a dedicated student with dreams of becoming a nurse technician, and I have no doubt that she’ll become a role model for other students in her community,” Luján said on Tuesday.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. The U.S. Senate confirmed Deb Haaland for the position of Secretary of the Interior Monday by a vote of 51 to 40.
Haaland is the first Native American to hold a cabinet-level office.
Just moments after her confirmation, Haaland tweeted out that she was ready to serve.
