The allure of Brooklyn, with lower rents and bigger floor plans than neighboring Manhattan, is one that many a New Yorker has felt. It’s what appealed to textile brand Cowtan & Tout, which, come February, will trade its Tribeca headquarters for a location in Industry City, a waterfront development in South Brooklyn that spans 16 buildings and 6 million square feet.

, owned by Belvedere Capital, Jamestown, and Angelo Gordon & Co today announced the addition of Cowtan & Tout, a decorative textile company, to the 16-building, six-million-square-foot campus on the Sunset Park waterfront.
Cowtan & Tout will bring both office and warehouse sides of its business to Industry City, taking over 23,200 s/f of space.
With the company’s migration to Brooklyn from Manhattan, Cowtan & Tout will join over 100 design tenants making up the Brooklyn Design District at Industry City,
a collective of furniture, interior design, architecture, and houseware companies. Members of the Design District include Rebecca Atwood Designs, Roll & Hill, Flavor Paper, and Egg Collective.

“We would say it isn’t David and Goliath,” Elizabeth Yeampierre, executive director of the organization Uprose, told The Tyee. “It was David and five Goliaths.”
But when Jamestown Properties withdrew its application for the Brooklyn rezoning this fall, effectively killing the project in the neighbourhood of Sunset Park, several things had become clear: the company had severely underestimated the power of a low-income neighbourhood determined to prevent housing from becoming unaffordable.
And Jamestown’s vision for Sunset Park a mix of high-end retailers, tech office spaces and luxury hotels was not as appealing to community members as the alternative put forward by Uprose and its allies: a redesigned industrial waterfront where people could earn decent salaries building the wind turbines, solar panels and low-carbon technology necessary for a Green New Deal.
