ARTIST Sally Simpson was the big winner last night (May 27) when Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council hosted the 2021 QPRC Art Awards at The Q Exhibition Space.
Simpson won the QPRC Acquisitive Art Award of $5,000 for her sculptural installation, “Fragile Equilibrium”, made of waxed animal bones, copper, steel and thread, which the artist says speaks to her of “loss, transformation and our uneasy relationship with the natural environment”.
A graduate of South Australian School of Art, Sydney College of Fine Arts, and the then ANU School of Art, she now lives on a small farm in this region. Her sculptures refer to totems, crosses, trees and grave markers and signify the sacred, symbolic and emblematic forms humans have used to express reverence and invoke awe and mystery.

QPRC 2021 Art Awards: $12,000 in prizes to be announced
The creative community have come out in force for the QPRC 2021 Art Awards, with 70 artworks submitted by talented residents from across the LGA.
The exhibition is a testament to the diversity of styles and high level of artistic skill incubating in the studios and farm sheds of the Queanbeyan-Palerang region.
This showcase will present a judging challenge for Monika McInerney, Director of the Belconnen Arts Centre and Gina Mobayed, Director of Goulburn Regional Gallery, who have the difficult task of selecting the awardees from such a high calibre field.
Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council has partnered with Bendigo Bank’s Braidwood and Bungendore Community Branches to offer an expanded art prize. The major prize will be $5000. The award is an acquisitive award with the winning artwork joining Council’s collection.

ITâLL be sequins, surrealism and sweet vibes in the National Portrait Gallery from 7-11pm on Friday, May 14, with inflatable sculptures, vocals, moves and colourful costumes by Victorian creative artists The Huxleys. As well, DJ Charlie Villas, Jazida, drag-man Guy Alias and performer Simone Page Jones will all be in action. Includes a peek at âAustralian Love Storiesâ, too. Bookings essential.
THE Headland Writers Festival, a new literature event in Tathra, NSW, has an extraordinary line-up of writers.
