Researchers unveil shared and unique brain molecular dysregulations in PTSD and depression

A comprehensive approach that examines the intersection of multiple biological processes is necessary to elucidate the development of stress-related disorders. In a new study, investigators from McLean Hospital, a member of the Mass General Brigham health care system, working with colleagues at The University of Texas at Austin and Lieber Institute for Brain Development, uncovered both shared and distinct molecular changes across brain regions, genomic layers, cell types, and blood in individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depressive disorder (MDD).

Trauma-focused psychotherapy is best to treat PTSD, researchers say

Trauma-focused psychotherapy is best to treat PTSD, researchers say January 30, 2021 Researchers, including those from the University of Texas, used neuroimaging to examine how the brain areas responsible for generating emotional responses to threats are changed by psychotherapy. The study, published in the journal Biological Psychiatry, stated that trauma-focused psychotherapy is the best available treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). “We know that psychotherapy works. But we don’t have a lot of good data to explain how it works, how the brain is changed by going through this process,” said Greg Fonzo, Ph.D., lead author of the study and an assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin. “That’s what we sought to find out,” he added.
