members to pump more oil so gas prices here will go down. what do we make of this? with the washington examiner, she joins us now. i don t think i have seen a more perverse and revealing policy than this one. explain what is going on here, if you would. actually, it is sort of befuddling what is going on. as you pointed out, the energy industry in the united states has been one of the most robust sectors in our economy, leading right before the pandemic, produce more oil than any other country in the world and we were self-sufficient in that area and not only was that a job creator, and not only just directly within the energy industry but also the downstream industries that support it, and the communities that then thrive on it and the school districts that benefit for it.

completely different. it s befuddling that they would dump over a negotiation. that is real issue for not only members of congress, for thousands of workers on capitol hill. by the way, there are congressional employees across the country too. pay has been locked in at $174,000 for ten years, which means congressional salaries also can t go up. so this is a significant issue for people who work on capitol hill, and the nrcc, and we don t know if it s going to happen, if the republican campaign committee kevin mccarthy and steny hoyer agreed not to politicize the issue. the campaign committee did it anyway for reasons that are not clear to me or to anybody. we re not sure if now members of congress are not going to get this raise. their staff isn t going to get this raise. it s an important issue. congressman crowley, everyone s looking at the statement that the nrcc made in their press release. but congressman, you know, i
him on an issue that he feels that strongly about. how about vetveterans? john mccain was alive at the time, a lot of republicans in 2015 completely denounced his comments about john mccain not being a war hero. donald trump went on to win the republican nomination. to your point about reading the polls and where the party is, i don t think this is going to damage him. once again, the story of donald trump politically is, what does he do to expand? this is something that does hurt him with independents. it s the thing that drove them to the democrats in the 2018 mid didn midterms. what about senator lindsey graham s position? fii find that befuddling. lu lindsey graham s identity is because of john mccain. that s how the country got to know lindsey graham. he proved himself to be the most loyal of friends to john mccain.
branch is utterly paralyzed by it, not knowing what to do. protective measures are not being pushed forward. so you get a sense that people are waiting for the next shoe to drop. and it s befuddling. the other thing that do you think he s going to fire jeff sessions? i don t think he ll do it before the election. i think the people around him said that would be crazy and politically disastrous. i think he also is aware of the fact that it will be difficult to get someone else in there. the next step is how do you get someone through the senate? if you think suddenly the senate will get a vertebrae? he will need to take stock of what the next senate looks like. it s possible it will have more republican members. there will be more people in the next senate who are republican supporters of trump.
