DEXTER, MI - Adaptation, change, transformation can describe what every restaurant in Michigan has had to do over the last year. Dexter Beer Grotto in Dexter is no exception, and they’ve been rolling with the punches.
“Metamorphosis is a good word,” said Phil Blass, general manager at the Grotto. He’s been an employee since the Grotto first opened in 2014. “We’ve gotten to show what we are made of, and not just to ourselves, but to our customers and our community.”

Yes, we know, it was a crazy time for all of us!
But imagine planning for nearly five years to open a farmstead brewery with an organic, farm-to-table menu in the tiny Southwestern Michigan village of Buchanan, and then imagine your big opening day to be interrupted by a pandemic?
“We had the comically, tragic timing of opening March 22,” said River Saint Joe co-founder and CEO Brian Dougherty.

The Benstein Grille in Commerce Twp. has two igloos. The BG Lodge is decorated in a cozy lodge theme. The Ice Globe is decorated with white faux fur pelts on the chairs and a ice glacier looking chandelier. The voting for Michigan’s Best Outdoor Dining kicked off on Tuesday, Jan. 26, and we’ve already received more than 6,500 votes in just one day.
Thanks to everyone who voted for their favorite restaurants in Michigan. Trust me, they appreciate it. We talked to several restaurant owners, as well as employees, over the last few days who are thrilled for the recognition as they battle months of business loss because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
