California Legislators Hear about Rejected Requests and Needed Changes for Year-Old Feather Alert MMIP System

When Yurok citizen Taralyn Ipina's sister went missing in the San Francisco area last year, her hope rested on the state’s newly implemented Feather Alert system. Launched Jan. 1, 2023, the statewide alert system for missing Indigenous people held the promise of aiding in search and recovery efforts. After six days with no word nor sighting of her sister, Ipina's request for the Feather Alert was rejected.

Hearing looks at first year of Feather Alerts in missing Indigenous cases

A year after state legislation went into effect that solidified the feather alert system in California, which notifies the public about Indigenous people who have gone missing similar to an AMBER alert, legislators, tribal leaders and police representatives met Wednesday in Sacramento. Hosted by Assemblymember James C. Ramos, who authored the legislation, the Assembly Select Committee on Native American Affairs hearing hashed out how the system has gone so far.

A place to call home

Sequoia Park Zoo Director Jim Campbell-Spickler says that, “Noni and Tule’s habitat is large and complex, including several sections where they can explore and play. They always have something to do, which is a good thing since bears are naturally curious and can be rather mischievous if bored."

Eureka planners OK acquisition from Ocean View cemetery for corp yard

The Eureka planning commission voted unanimously on Monday evening to move forward a planned city operations complex, with two commissioners absent. The plan to build on undeveloped property next to Ocean View cemetery is the latest attempt by the city to relocate the corporation yard that Eureka says is in poor shape and threatened by geology. The Eureka city council will consider it before it is officially approved.
