There are just three months left for community groups to
apply for a portion of this year’s Bay of Plenty Regional
Council Environmental Enhancement funding, with grants of up
to $25,000 per project available.
Overall the Regional
Council has $300,000 available to environmental community
groups in the Bay of Plenty through the fund, which supports
local projects that aim to enhance, preserve or protect the
region s natural or historic character.

Akoranga a Hawea Vercoe (Hawea Vercoe Memorial Fund) grants
are also funded through the EEF to help Kura Kaupapa Māori,
Kohanga Reo and bi-lingual schools in the region with

Pet food manufacturer, Ziwi Limited, has been fined
$66,000 for discharges of odour, and $64,000 for discharges
of process wastewater from its pet food factory at 18 Boeing
Place, Mount Maunganui.
Bay of Plenty Regional Council
prosecuted Ziwi for both odour and wastewater discharges in
2018. Ziwi pleaded guilty.
Odours generated by Ziwi
have led to a significant number of complaints from the
local community. From 2008 to 2017 Regional Council received
224 complaints from the public about discharges of odour
from the Ziwi site. The odour prosecution was based on odour
discharges on five separate dates and followed earlier
enforcement action:

New rules to stop the spread of aquatic pests across the
Bay of Plenty come in to force this summer with boat ramp
users now required to self-certify that their vessels and
trailers are free from freshwater fish and plant
pests.

within the Bay of Plenty Regional Pest Management Plan 2020
– 2030, which became operative on the 17th December 2020,

Bay of Plenty Regional Council are implementing Level 2
of the Water Shortage Event Standard Operating Procedure for
some streams with headwaters in the west-southwest of
Rotorua.
The New Year has brought some weather
extremes to the Bay of Plenty, with some intense rainfall in
the Eastern Bay while dry conditions have been experienced
in most of the central and western parts of the
region.
This has resulted in several streams near
Rotorua experiencing very low flows. The Ngongotahā Stream
has reached its lowest recorded flow, for this time of the
year, since records began in 1975.
