surf could make things interesting. this is the path expected just to go to the east of cape cod. but still with the storm that is so wide, hundreds of miles wide. i can tell you that downtown boston, many places in cape cod, even if it s not a direct hit, you ll still have strong winds, heavy surf, heavy rainfall. this storm is expected to make its way just to the south of cape cod, east of new york with winds of 70 miles per hour this evening. but as it moves into an area of colder water and stronger upper level winds, the storm is expected to weaken. it moves farther up to the bay of fundy and out of harm s way. we re covering the earth, we re covering the storms. a lot to talk about on this friday. so you were just talking about long island. where is it in relation where is the storm right now in relation to long island? anyone who happened to be tuning in from long island can actually step outside, look up
bay of fundy, you will increase the tides again, also, all along toward st. john s and the on shore pounding, but you know, those people up there in atlantic, and the canada, and the maritimes, they are a hearty bunch if you have never met them. they can take it. great part of canada. thank you very much. standby, chad. and north carolina s outer banks are hours away from feeling the storm, and our meteorologist rob marciano is there in kill devil. we have new satellite pictures that i withn t to show the viewers because it shows the power and the strength of the hurricane earl. i can see the wind picking up behind you and the surf as well. set the scener to us. reporter: well, it has been a slow and developing day, and started out sunny at times with a light breeze, but things have deteriorated throughout the day. and the size of the storm as it has grown at one point being a huge category 4 storm, and i can tell you that the pulse of the community went from a little bit more casu
of the center, tropical storm-force winds some 200 miles from the center and those conditions are going to be felt as the storm continues to march up to the north. by friday, :00 p.m. it s expected to weaken, as it runs into an area of cooler water. gusts of 120. then to saturday, moving closer to the bay of fundy. with winds of 75. remember, you ve got the cone of uncertainty, the area shaded in the whitish color, the storm could move closer to the coast which would be worse conditions obviously for the coast, or it could veer a little more to the east, which would be a little bit better. but one thing you can expect, very rough conditions, rough suf, obviously some monster waves, as we wrap up quickly. we ll show you the windfield we were talking about. hurricane winds probable in the areas shaded in red. that s where you re going to have the strongest winds, as you spread out, the winds will be weaker, back towards columbia, south carolina and towards richmond. but along the coast,
maybe toward nantucket, and even toward cape cod. that forecast as it continues to lose steam, 85 miles per hour, but that approach is late tomorrow night, and 10, 12, maybe 2:00 in the morning saturday morning and that will take it to the east of cape cod, cape hat rteras here and nantuct here, and finally the glancing blow as it turns, but the biggest threat. the biggest threat to life is if you are in the water with those rip currents that are going to be everywhere from new york all of the way down to florida for the next few days. stay out of the water. and what about the viewers in canada? how worried should they be? they should be very worried, because that is the next step. it will eventually turn back to the left, and get into nova scotia, and this is the bay of fundy, and very large swell. if you go to google bay of fundy, and figure out the tide that they get in there. it could be at times 40 feet from low tide to high tide and if you ram a hurricane into that
you havant evacuated, you probably don t need to at this point. here is the new forecast path just out from the hurricane center. it does not include cape cod now in the actual cone. just nantucket in that cone, feeling more and more confident we will not get a direct landfall out of cape cod, probably just tropical storm-force winds on nan tucket and cape cod. new update, category 1 remain a 1 into nova scotia up there into the bay of fundy. as far as we are going, it does not look like we will see more significant damage. maybe minor power outages. when it was a big huge storm, the waves that is the show on today. some beaches closed, folks not allowed out there because of the rip current. the other question is travelers on the east coast in terms of the acre the roads it is busy. i have to say more than anything, earl is an inconvenience for a lot of people trying to get to their destinations. they had to wait until tonight
