Reporter chris, i can tell you its an eerie scene where you go up to a hospital and theres just row after row of emergency vehicles of ambulances, theyre not there dropping patients off for care, but they have lined up to pick up patients. More than 215 patients and transport them, evacuate them from the hospital to another facility. Transporting them because as you say, they have lost power in this area. New york citys mayor Michael Bloomberg talked about there are massive Power Outages and flooding in the area. Just after 3 00 a. M. Here on the east coast and at least 16 people have reportedly been killed. More than 7 million are without power as sandy now is moving inland across pennsylvania. Good morning, im Chris Jansing live in new york. We want to run down the latest development as cross the midatlantic and the northeast and lets start in new jersey which took the brunt of this superstorm when it came ashore. Atlantic city and cape may have been absolutely inundated with water. Further north in jersey city reports of building collapses, the Oyster Creek Nuclear plant has been put on elevated alert amid high water. In new york, all of Lower Manhattan below 39th street is without power. Some of that caused by an explosion at a con ed substation. Right now new york city is seeing more Power Outages than at any time in its history including two out of every three people on long island. Destroyed at least 50 homes. Thats 50. In new jersey, Atlantic City was largely submerged and cutting it off from the mainland. Up and down the new jersey coast, communities are seeing significant flooding. Downto downtown hoboken and jersey city seeing water in the streets. We talked to the mayor and she said perhaps 50 of that city is underwater. Some shoreline residents in connecticut are stranded in their homes and the National Guard has been called out to rescue them. The storm damaged property from stonington to greenwich. In delaware, the storm wiped out beaches in several communities and Rehoboth Beach and dewey beach, thousands of people were evacuated from wilmington and delaware city. Now one final word, there is some word that the potomac river, specifically the area between hancock, amaryland and washington, d. C. , could begin flooding to night. At least 18 people have been killed, early estimates, but the damage from sandy at somewhere between 10 billion and 20 billion, but that figure could rise as people assess in the daylight. Nearly 8 Million People waking up without power this morning. Sandy made landfall as whats being called a post Tropical Cyclone on the Southern Coast of new jersey not too far from Atlantic City at about 8 00 p. M. , sustained winds of 80 miles per hour, thats hurricane force, folks. And hurricaneforce winds extended up to 175 miles from the center of the storm. Tropical force storm winds spread out 485 miles from the center, a 13foot storm surge flooded Battery Park City in Lower Manhattan and that broke a record that had been set in 1821.
