On a sultry April day, Thakurnagar, the holy site of Matuas in the Bongaon sub-division of West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district bordering Bangladesh, sizzles with banners of rival political parties asking for votes. As if indifferent to the ongoing political tension and the pandemic threat, a boisterous religious rally makes its way through the town, with men jumping as high as they can and women rolling on the roads. The sound of drums gets deafening. Every participant seems to be in ecstasy.

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday expressed anguish at a PIL seeking direction to the Centre to take steps and consider a new law to check religious conversions.
A bench headed by Justice R.F. Nariman said there is a reason why word propagate is there in the Constitution and there is no reason why persons above 18 cannot be allowed to choose their religion. Declining to entertain the PIL by advocate Ashwini Upadhyay, the bench said: It is a publicity interest litigation. After a brief hearing in the matter Upadhyay agreed to withdraw the petition.

GUWAHATI: Assam health, Finance and Education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the family members of CRPF jawan Bablu Rabha who was martyred in the Maoist attack at Bijapur in Chhatisgarh.
The minister offered his condolences to the bereaved family members at their residence at Dudhnoi in the Golapara district. I paid a visit to Martyr Bablu Rabha home at Dudhnoi in Goalpara, met his family members and offered my condolences. The loss is irreparable yet Sri Rabha s martyrdom in #ChhattisgarhNaxalAttack shall remain a matter of great pride for us forever, Sarma tweeted.
