Prince George Free Press » First Nations promise legal challenges to forest policy

Some northern First Nations abandoned the negotiating table Thursday, choosing instead to head to court, to the international marketplace and possibly to the blockades. The Northwest Tribal Treaty Nations, with the support of the First Nations Summit, announced they will protest changes to provincial forest policy by every means at their disposal. “Government and industry are looking for certainty, but only First Nations can provide that certainty,” said Ed John, First Nations Summer task group member. “Until proper accommodation happens, neither the marketplace nor the investment community will have certainty.” That uncertainty could result from a number of actions being planned by First Nations who met in Prince George Thursday, said Carrier Sekani Tribal Council Chief Mavis Erickson.

SEPTA, DVRPC to study Regional Rail fare equity

WHYY By A train pulling into 30th Street Station. (Emma Lee/WHYY) SEPTA made a push in 2020 to make transit more equitable and now Regional Rail may get the same treatment. The Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC) approved a plan Thursday to spend $100,000 on an analysis of the commuter rail system looking at ways to make the system work better and cost less for Philadelphia riders. The approval to study Regional Rail comes more than a month after SEPTA awarded Nelson/Nygaard Consulting Associates a $3 million contract to oversee a redesign of its bus network, amid a financial crisis that has made adapting to changing needs and serving new riders essential to the survival of the system.

Philadelphia's Transit Authority Rethinks Regional Rail

Philadelphia’s Transit Authority Rethinks Regional Rail Pennsylvania’s largest transit authority is currently losing $1 million a day due to low ridership. But officials want to use the disruption to rebuild the system and make it more equitable for its community. Patricia Madej, The Philadelphia Inquirer   |   January 26, 2021   |  News (TNS) Make no doubt about it, the COVID-19 pandemic has created plenty of knots for Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) to work through. Behind closed doors, there s chatter about mitigation strategies and vaccine distribution, talks with its unions about protecting workers and riders, and conversations with lawmakers on its dire financial challenges. As the sixth-largest transit agency in the country faces the future, another big question comes to mind:

Philadelphia gets new bicycle counters

WHYY By A bicyclist rides over a new bicycle counter embedded under the surface of Center City bike lane. (DVRPC) Philadelphia has installed permanent bicycle use counters along two heavily used Center City bike lanes. While various planning agencies occasionally deploy temporary use counters across the city, officials announced on Friday that the new, first-of-their-kind counters had been embedded in the surface of Spruce and Pine, near 12th Street. Both streets host crosstown bike lanes. “Unlike the other permanent counters on our region’s trails, these in-street counters are the first of their kind in a bike lane on a city street,” said Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission executive director Barry Seymour. “This is a great new source of data because we’re able to monitor the levels of biking on each street, 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year.”
