not been the charm for kevin mccarthy. you see the tally on the screen. we are waiting any minute for this vote to officially be closed, and then the question is what happens next? do they try for time number six? where unless something has dramatically changed and we don t think it has, mccarthy will probably lose again. do they try to take a break? what are the concessions that are happening behind the scenes? we have the best team in the biz, here to answer the questions to the best of their abilities including capitol hill correspondent ali vitali and political director and moderator of meet the press, chuck todd, nbc news colleague, and steve kornacki is posted at the big board and former chief communications adviser to former speaker paul ryan and msnbc political analyst brendan buck is with us, too. if you re looking at this saying, okay, i ve been watching this coverage for six hours. what has changed? what is different? what is going to change the moment? here is w
the gavel. this morning, he was not able to bring along a handful of far right lawmakers who oppose his nomination and are demanding more big power concessions from him as the price for going forward. we may have a battle on the floor. but the battle is for the conference and the country. that s fine with me. i don t see how a few people maybe it s 5, maybe it s 20 sit because they want a gravel that they can t earn. that s not what the constituents voted them for. this as house democrats united behind hakeem jeffries, with a new younger ship team holding business cards to play as the republicans dissolve into chaos. why is choosing a speaker important? the house cannot form committees or do work on any legislation until there is a presiding officer. it s been a century since it has taken more than one roll call vote to fill the position. at this hour, we don t know how many votes it will take to elect the next speaker or how long it will drag out and da minute dimi
Voting for speaker. This time louisiana congressman mike johnson is the fourth nominee for republicans. Hello, and welcome. Im sandra smith in new york, a big welcome back to you, john. John good to be back, john roberts in washington, and this is america reports. Remains unclear whether mike johnson will have the support to win the job. Chad pergram, of course, has been watching this for what feels like weeks now, because it has been weeks. Chad, whats the latest . They are getting very close to taking yet another ballot here for Speaker Of The House. What they have been doing the past couple of minutes here is putting into nomination the candidate for this particular round, of course mike johnson, the new one here and pete aguilar, the chair of the Democratic Caucus is again nominating Hakeem Jeffries, the democratic leader. This feels different than some of the other chapters we have been through over the past couple of weeks. I talked to a couple members a few minutes ago, members
House democrats has been answered. By our nominee for speaker, the gentleman from brooklyn, the leader of our House Democratic caucus, the honorable Hakeem Jeffries [ applause ] leader jeffries has answered our call, but the majoritys nominee is disconnected. Disconnected from the American People and their values. Maga extremism is designed to divide. And it has broken the republican party. Their nominees vision is a direct attack on the freedom and the rights of the American People. And hes got the record to prove it. The republican nominee has voted against healthcare for children, for veterans, even for 9 11 survivors. He has opposed lowering the cost of insulin repeatedly. He wants to cut Social Security and medicare. Dont take it from me, it was raised on the other side of the aisle, just this week, as a Selling Point to make him speaker. Over his 16 years in the house, the republican nominee has never supported a farm bill. What does that mean . What does that mean . It means he
He is not only focused on one thing. I dont know anybody thats done more to highlight and talk about the border disaster that is underway right now as we speak. I had the privilege of serving here when jeh johnson was secretary of homeland security. I have a very high opinion of jeh johnson. I think he is one of the finest Public Servants i ever met. He was asked on one occasion to define what was a crisis on the southern border. He said any time you have more than 1,000 illegal entries a day, you have a crisis. We have 10 or 11 times that every single day. In that tide of humanity thats coming across, there is a boatload of fentanyl coming to kill Tens Of Thousands of all of our constituents. There are Human Traffickers who are taking advantage of young men and young women and, frankly, predators in our own country, and they are bringing them across, not by the tens or 20s or dozens, but by the hundreds and the thousands. There are amongst that flow of people, people that wish us ill,
