SCUCC offering course on immigration

The Sanibel Congregational United Church of Christ will present a Zoom course, “From Far Off Shores: An Historical and Theological Exploration of Immigration,” taught by Senior Pastor John Danner today, April 7, and on April 14 and 21 at 9:30 a.m.
The course will include an examination of biblical views of immigration, as well as more contemporary theological understandings of individual and mass migrations. It will also provide an overview of the history of immigrants and immigration in the United States. While not a uniquely American issue, immigration has largely shaped the nation and it has had a particular impact on the shape the nation has taken over the decades.

Joshua Chamberlain was born in 1828 in Brewer, Maine.
His mother was very religious and so he took than from her, while his father passed on a deep interest in the military. As a child, Joshua Chamberlain was shy, and he stammered a lot. At a young age he worked in a brickyard and in the timber industry before taking a teaching job in 1846. A studious young man, however, he set his sights on college, and to prepare, he studied Greek, rhetoric, and Latin. Chamberlain was accepted to Bowdoin College in 1848 and graduated in 1852. He then spent three years at the Bangor Theological Seminary. However after he completed his training there, he took a teaching job at Bowdoin rather than work as a minister. BRUNSWICK - Linton H. Studdiford was born in New York, N.Y. on Nov. 11 1941, the son of Andrew Douglass Studdiford .

BRUNSWICK – Linton H. Studdiford was born in New York, N.Y. on Nov. 11, 1941, the son of Andrew Douglass Studdiford and Marjorie Haupt Studdiford. He grew up in Chappaqua, N.Y., where he attended the local schools.
After the death of his father, Linton attended Kent School in Kent, Conn. He went on to study at Princeton University and the University of Pennsylvania.
Linton met Bonnie Bingham and they married before he attended UPenn. While in Philadelphia, they had a daughter, Marjorie. They moved to Mount Holly, N.J. where Linton taught and ultimately became head master of Saint Mary’s Hall-Doane Academy.
