face-to-face at the white house today. we ll hear from the president coming up next hour. also this he s going to get osama and bring him back. what a story that is, a neighbor voicing support for a one-man mission to capture osama bin laden. good morning, i m brooke baldwin in the cnn newsroom. day 58 of the gulf oil catastrophe, and the president now officially taking on face to face here bp officials and estimates on the amount of oil gushes into the gulf. they keep rising. government scientists now say somewhere in the ballpark of 35,000 and 65,000 barrels of oil a day may be spewing from the well. last week it was around 20,000
meantime, rescue efforts continue to save as many birds as possible, but with so much wildlife to save out there and so little time, volunteers are lining up to help. but as gary tuckman reports, they re being told, hey, thanks, but no thanks. reporter: deep into louisiana marshland, searching for pelicans and gulls struggling to survive. there are thousands of birds just in this one location. one small barrier island in the gulf of mexico. at any time, every one of these birds could plunge into the water to get a fish and ends up mired in oil. and that s what michael from the louisiana department of wildlife and fisheries is looking for. you see that opening in grass? he s in there. reporter: we see it, too, a baby seagull drenched in oil, barely moving. the gull is one of more than 600 birds now rescued in louisiana since this occurred. and brought for care in a center
there. walking over here, you can check your latest numbers on wall street. dow right now down about eight points, sitting at 10,396. and for the fifth time here, since the deepwater horizon rig exploded, government scientists are raising their estimate for exactly how much oil is flowing into the gulf of mexico. patricia woo joins us from new york, and now patricia, we are hearing as much as potentially, what, 60,000 barrels a day? exactly, brooke. that s as much as a 50% increase from previous estimates. now, 60,000 barrels, a pretty big number. so let s break it down to everyday terms. it takes 42 of these gallon jugs of milk to fill just one barrel. so 42 times 60,000? we re talking about 2.5 million gallons a day. that s enough to fill four olympic-size swimming pools. another way to look at it, a tanker truck you might see on the highway holds about 200 barrels. so it would take 300 of those tankers to equal 60,000 barrels.
the state s richest fishing oil. this is nothing short of a disaster but grand isle s mayor says red tape is bogging down the cleanuppests. he s fighting the federal government to build oil containment systems between barrier islands. we re asking you agencies out there to work with us, work with us and listen to us, and i guarantee you will be happy. it will come back after hurricane season. we can protect the estuaries. reporter: booms and skimmers didn t make it to this part of louisiana before the oil creeped into the bay and it s proof that bp s cleanup plan isn t adequate. when you hear bp say they are doing everything they can. nobody wants this cleaned up more than us. nonsense. they need to fight it in the coast, nowhere the shrimp and crabs and oysters are. the damage is already done. reporter: almost two months into the oil disaster, bp has
