[COMMENTARY] It s a family affair: Local elections becoming bounty for political families - Opinion

For every Barack Obama, there’s always a Kennedy, a Bush or a Trump waiting in the wings. For every self-made politician, there will always be more political scions ready to run for office and win, because in a crowded political field where everyone could run for office, it certainly helps if you have a last name that is familiar to millions. The simultaneous regional elections on Dec. 9 once again gave us proof that being part of a powerful political family can get you far in politics. In Surakarta, the eldest son of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, was declared the winner of the city’s mayoral election after scoring a landslide win over his rival Bagyo Wahyono. In Medan, North Sumatra, one member of the President’s extended family, his son-in-law Bobby Nasution, is expected to win a local election there, beating the incumbent A.

Jokowi sons Gibran, Bobby lead 2020 mayoral polls in Surakarta, Medan

The quick counts of at least two pollsters project promising early gains for Gibran Rakabuming Raka Bobby Nasution, respectively the President’s eldest son and son-in-law, in yesterday’s 2020 regional elections. The latest polls indicate that Gibran has secured more than 80 percent of the vote in the Surakarta mayoral election in Central Java. The Charta Politika quick count, which has finished counting 100 percent of the samples from polling stations, shows that Gibran and his running mate Teguh Prakosa are leading with 87.15 percent of the vote, while rival pair Bagyo Wahyono and Supardjo FX is tailing with just 12.85 percent. A separate quick count by the Voxpol Center also shows that the polls are favoring Gibran-Teguh with 86.65 percent of the vote, and just 13.34 percent for just Bagyo-Supardjo.
