Our third and final panel will examine challenges to the public park ideal and we are honored to have, as our moderator allegra happy haines, who is the executive director of denver parks and recreation. She was born in denver, traveled east, and then found herself back home, where she has work for mayors. Federico pena and John Hickenlooper and served on the city council as president. In addition to her public posts, happy as works for several years as a facilitator with the National Civic league and she was a founding board member of colorado black women for Political Action and mile high youth corps. You might recognize these trail of governors which stretched all the way down to the missouri river. Coming up next, we will hear about some of south dakotas former leaders. The trail of governors was started in 2011 by a couple of businessman in town who were a couple of history buffs and wanted to find a way to promote history in the capital city. Taurus ets a lot of tourists who are visiting the capital, the capital city, and they wanted a way to inform people about the history of the state. As far as we know, this place is anything this project is unlike anything else in the country. The project is to have a bronze statue of every governor. It starts at the state capital, and then it goes down capital avenue to the courthouse which was the site of the First Capital building. It extends it down main street to the American Legion headquarters

It extends it down main street to the American Legion headquarters. This is governor george s mickelson. It was really a period of transformation for the state. He was a very charismatic, energetic, positive guide. His father had been governor in the 1940s. When he ran for governor, he was not a very well known man. He did a lot of door to door and on the ground campaigning. He won the election in a bit of a upset. He put a lot of emphasis on economic development. He was governor during our state centennial. He also really emphasized our relationship with the native american tribes. He also proposed that columbus day be renamed native american day. Governor mickelson died in a plane crash when he had

The state is by far the largest employer and it really ominates the economy here. When dakota territory was created in 1862, the original territorial capital was in yankton, in the far east corner of the territory. The territory was both north and south dakota. As the territory was settled, three distinct territories emerged. There was yankton near sioux falls.
