Stakeholders yesterday kicked against nomination form charges for aspirants in the July 24 local government election in Ogun State.
The chairman of the state electoral body, Babatunde Osibodu, had on Tuesday announced N200,000 and N100,000 as charges for chairmanship and councillorship aspirants’ forms respectively.
Osibodu also announced a nomination form fee waiver for female candidates contesting in the election.
Reacting, the State Chairman of New Nigeria Peoples Party, Oginni Olaposi, described the charges as ‘fraud’.
The NNPP also accused Governor Dapo Abiodun of downplaying the principle of democracy by changing the ‘free, fair and credible’ election to ‘another thing’.

The Chairman of the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC), Mr Babatunde Osibodu, has promised that the Commission would conduct local government election that would remain a benchmark in the country.
Osibodu stated this in his address delivered during a stakeholders’ meeting on the 2021 local government elections, held at the Cinema Hall, June 12 Cultural Centre, Abeokuta, on Tuesday.
The chairman maintained that the Commission would conduct free, fair and credible elections.
He said: “We are guided by several enabling laws, paramount among which are Section 197,sub-section 1(b) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, which authorises the establishment of the State Independent Electoral Commissions across the country; and Section 14 of the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission Law 2001, which empowers the Commission to organise, undertake and supervise all elections to Local Government Councils

The Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) has announced Saturday, July 24 as the date for the conduct of the Local Government Elections in the state.
This was announced by the chairman of the OGSIEC, Babatunde Osibodu during an engagement with leaders of political parties and members of the civil society Osibodu in Abeokuta, the state capital.
The Chairman also announced the waiver of N200,000 and N150,000 respectively for women contesting for the post of chairmanship and councillorship posts as their men counterparts are to pay the same amount for purchase nomination forms from the commission.
He assured stakeholders of free, fair, credible, and transparent electoral processes and appealed for the political parties to show understanding and support the commission to achieve the stated goal of the emergence of responsible and responsive representatives at the third tier of government

DAILY POST reports that those vying to be councillors are to pay N100,000 each.
The Chairman of OGSIEC, Babatunde Osibodu, disclosed this on Tuesday at a press conference he addressed at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta.
Osibodu said, “The Electoral Law 2007 provides for payment of a non-refundable deposit by intending candidates.”
He revealed that “For Chairmanship candidates, this fee has been set as N200,000 while for Councillorship candidates, it is N100,000.”
However, Osibodu said women participating in the election would not pay a dime.
“For the avoidance of doubt, this means that female candidates will not be required to make any deposit,” he declared.
