With winter barley and oats approaching growth 31/32 and wheat at or around growth stage 31, some key applications are either happening or are imminent.
Wild oats
Wild oats that have not already been treated, should get priority.
According to Billy Cotter of Syngenta: “Wild oats are better controlled at earlier growth stages. It is important to get herbicides, like Axial Pro, on to the tillers as well as the main stem before crop shading becomes an issue. Avoid spraying when the wild oats are not growing actively, keep to recommended rates and follow sequencing guidelines around broadleaf herbicides to get best results.”
Lesser canary grass is a growing problem on Irish tillage farms.
Canary grass is a growing problem on Irish tillage farms. Its small seeds allow the grass weed to spread easily. It is extremely competitive and while there is little information on it, its appearance in the field suggests a significant effect on yield, aside from difficulty at harvesting.
Lesser canary grass is turning into a serious problem in some areas, particularly where spring barley is common and continuous.
At present there is no known evidence of resistance to herbicides in lesser canary grass.
The strong-stemmed grass is extremely difficult to control without a herbicide

Problem grass weeds such as wild oats, sterile brome, Italian ryegrass and blackgrass are increasing in tillage fields. They are very competitive, can cause yield losses of over 80% and can explode in numbers if left uncontrolled.
Weed control generally involves a combination of herbicide and cultural tools.
The ACCase (Group A) and ALS (Group B) herbicides are most commonly used for selective grass weed control (Table 1).
