'Theatre releases are the lifeline of the film': Jayam Ravi ahead of digital release of 'Bhoomi'- The New Indian Express

Express News Service Sometime in the summer of 2003, around the release of a film called Jayam, I remember riding down the Kodambakkam flyover and seeing a huge cutout of the film with an actor I could not recognise. Now, 18 years later, I found myself talking to the actor, one of the industry’s most reliable stars, about his upcoming release, Bhoomi. “During this period, I think I have understood the kind of cinema my audience wants me to do. They have been accommodating of my experiments, and it is for them that I make my films,” says a confident Ravi, who has just made one of the boldest decisions of his career by opting for an OTT release for his 25th film, Bhoomi, which also marks his third collaboration with director Lakshman.

Asphalt Burning review: A fun ride sans action

What is one prepared to do for love? In the third installment of the much-loved Norwegian action-comedy franchise Børning Roy (Anders Baasmo Christiansen) is trying to save his impending marriage, which he has almost ruined by a bad bet after one too many drinks. Now he has to either win a race or lose his fiancee. For those needing more context, Roy is a man-child whose enthusiasm for cars and racing is only matched in degree by the misfortune in his familial relationships. It’s his faithful friends who keep him going.  With such a simple premise, it may seem a stretch to make three films. But then, the inspiration here is the Fast and Furious franchise, which is inching towards its 10th installment. Is Asphalt Burning Norway’s answer to Fast and Furious? Not really. The driving has its moments but the CGI is cringe-worthy and the jokes are sub-par. In fact, it makes the Fast and Furious look Oscar-worthy. So now you know. The biggest drawback is the heart of this film: the r

India's OTT revo:ution : Rise of our homemade content- The New Indian Express

Express News Service Back in 2012, there was a heated debate that had the potential to kickstart a revolution in entertainment consumption in India. It was started by Kamal Haasan when he wanted to release his Vishwaroopam on DTH services hours before its theatrical release. His idea was snuffed out quickly. Eight years and a global pandemic later, every studio across the world has adopted variations of this model. There are now 10-plus OTT streamers used by content creators to showcase their products. People who swore by theatrical releases not only warmed up to direct OTT premieres but became ambassadors of this growing market too. While audiences logged in in droves to watch direct-to-digital films that would’ve been theatrical releases if not for the pandemic, the reception to original Indian OTT content in 2020 was quite heartening. It was nothing short of a tectonic shift in entertainment consumption. Here are a few trends that best encapsulate the kind of Indian content th

'I'm Your Woman' movie review: Subverting the gangster genre

Express News Service With I am Your Woman, director Julia Hart indulges in her love for the typical 70s gangster film, but with a difference. It is a reimagination-of-sorts from the perspective of a moll (a gangster’s girlfriend). It is all about the mess men leave behind for the women to clean up. Here, the men and their actions are deliberately and adeptly kept out of focus by Hart. All we see is the consequential sufferings of a gangster’s wife, who largely isn’t even aware of what’s happening around her. WATCH TRAILER: It’s not just the protagonist; even the viewer is kept in the dark. This might make the film a bit trying to watch on occasion.
