Surely the preliminary report of the WHO investigators is good news – certainly puts the hypothesis that Covid-19 leaked from a research lab in the bin. Isn t that a relief? After all, why on earth would anyone hope that hypothesis was true? Peter Daszak, a British-American member of the WHO team in Wuhan, previously told USA TODAY that in peoples imaginations there might be this image of one person in a lab in China who drops a petri dish and that somehow leads to a massive outbreak. It s just not like that. Every year there are millions of people going in bat caves and hunting and eating wildlife. It happens every day.

Parliament's tie issue « The Standard

Not wearing a tie in Parliament is a weird issue for the Maori Party to get ready to die in a ditch about.  But the rules should be changed.

No Right Turn: Climate Change: Legal actions

No Right Turn wrote last week: The Auckland Council will soon be consulting on a Regional Land Transport Plan, setting their transport priorities (and funding) for the next decade. Obviously, this will have a huge impact on the city’s emissions profile. And to make sure they think hard about that, Lawyers for Climate Action is threatening to take them to court if they get it wrong: Climate change lobbyists are warning Auckland Council it could face legal action if its decisions on reducing greenhouse gas emissions fall short of promises made. The message came from Lawyers for Climate Action during a presentation to the council’s planning committee on Thursday.

Climate news and personal actions

2022 last chance to slash emissions to avoid 2C? https://t.co/Lf3RhNlay1 If emissions keep rising we ll be on target to hit 2C in the 2030s (2034 at the earliest according to this analysis which uses a conservative 19th century baseline and looks at the latest climate models which may underestimate Arctic heating and feedbacks).https://t.co/qr9KNHhyol From that last link, Under the Paris Agreement adopted in 2015, virtually all the world’s nations pledged to limit global warming to “well below” 2C above pre-industrial levels and also, if possible, “pursue” efforts to cap warming at 1.5C. At present, the world is not close to being on track to meet either target.

Might see a burst of life around noon. Me? I m off to feed the family cats. Ed 3 New Zealand has a serious problem with alcohol. The reporting in this article about this riot in Whangamata is part of the issue. At no stage does it address the issue of this class A drug s vice like grasp over the levers of control in this country. The liquor industry, politicians and a liberal culture is responsible for this. While I agree with the words Sandra Goudie about rich self-indulgent teenagers, it would be interesting to see what her voting record is on alcohol.
