City Auditors Office says most of $1.28M has been returned

Correction: This story has been edited for accuracy to better show when the incident occurred, when the Auditor s Office found out and the mayor s involvement since finding out about it. Despite most of the $1.28 million mistakenly paid to the state being returned, the error was again a topic of controversy for the Marion City Council. During Monday s council committee meeting, Deputy Auditor Marden Watts said $1.1 million has been returned to the City of Marion after it was mistakenly paid to the state instead of the IRS. Watts added that the request to get the additional $184,000 has been submitted and is awaiting to be processed, although it could take three months before it is deposited.
