Wrangle seeds call for more urban trees

Wrangle seeds call for more urban trees Newsroom 14/01/2021 © Provided by Newsroom The debate over cutting down a large macrocarpa to make way for a new residential development has highlighted a wider agreement between developers and protesters: that we also need to be planting far more trees. At the corner of Great North Road and Ash Street in Avondale, a 150-year-old macrocarpa stands its ground at the centre of what’s becoming a politicised spat. Defenders of the tree have been lodging themselves in its branches for weeks, in defiance of an Ockham Residential development being given the green light to remove it for a high-density housing project.

Court scuppers plans to rezone farmland for development near Auckland Airport

The Environment Court has rejected a proposal to rezone part of the Pūkaki Peninsula. Farmland in the heart of south Auckland will remain a green idyll after the Environment Court dashed the hopes of the landowners to rezone it. A group of farmers and landowners had sought to overturn an Auckland Council decision rejecting their proposal to expand the Rural Urban Boundary and the Future Urban Zone across more than 83 hectares of land near Auckland Airport. But after bouncing between the Environment Court and High Court over the last four years, the quest to overturn the decision was rejected in an Environment Court ruling at the end of last year.

In thrall to the sprawl: How Aroha can cure Auckland's addiction

In thrall to the sprawl: How Aroha can cure Auckland’s addiction Newsroom 12/01/2021 © Provided by Newsroom Editor’s note: The opinions in this article are the author’s, as published by our content partner, and do not represent the views of MSN or Microsoft. A protest to save a macrocarpa tree on Avondale’s Ash Street began just before Christmas. Auckland apartment builder Ockham’s Mark Todd argues that while the loss of a lone macrocarpa is not the ideal option, he says it’s far preferable to losing another six hectares to urban sprawl. Every year on 1 October, when the spring rains ease and the ground hardens, hundreds of heavy machines roar to life on our city’s fringe. During the officially designated Earthworks Season which runs for seven months until the end of April, the equivalent of 10 rugby fields each day are devoured as Auckland sprawls ever outwards.
