The Astrodome Conservancy presents Race for the Dome Many events have been canceled or postponed due to coronavirus concerns. Please check with the organization before going to any event. The Astrodome Conservancy will present the inaugural Race for the Dome, presented by Cadence Bank, a virtual race around the Houston Astrodome supporting efforts to create a vibrant future for the landmark dome. Participants can run, walk, bike, hike, hop, scoot, or skate to complete a 5K race on their own time at their own pace and report completion online to receive a keepsake finisher medal. The first 200 people to register are eligible to race around the Astrodome itself on April 10. The first 500 people to register will receive a pair of limited-edition Dome sunglasses.

Photo courtesy of City of Houston In 2018, thanks to efforts by then Harris County Judge Ed Emmett, the Harris County Commissioners court approved a $105 million project that would transform Houston’s beloved Astrodome into an event center. The project was met with praise by politicians, sports fans, and longtime locals. Yet a year later, as CultureMap reported, that plan ended as Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo questioned if the $105 million plan, “is fiscally responsible, that it will actually, with the funds committed to it, that it will actually get us to a point where the Astrodome is self-sustaining.”
