PETALING JAYA: The tiff over water between Penang and Kedah underscores how deep political differences have trumped other priorities.
It has the potential to tarnish Malaysia’s image as an investment destination, which will have a major negative impact on the country’s economy, according to an analyst and an economist.

PETALING JAYA: A centralised water management system, under the purview of the federal government, will go a long way towards alleviating the water supply problems in several parts of the country.
Experts and stakeholders said the move would ensure more resources, which would result in more efficient water supply system.
“States do not have the kind of financial resources nor the clout to enforce the law that the federal government has to stamp out pollution of water sources,” Klang MP Charles Santiago told

He was commenting on a report that Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor) and Universiti Malaya are collaborating on water resources research.
WHILE Malaysia may have sufficient water for now, this is not a certainty for the future.
The continuous decline of our water quality due to irresponsible and unethical human behaviours will render water that is acceptable to maintain human well-being scarce, says Professor Dr Zainura Zainon Noor.
Additionally, improper planning of water utilisation and allocation may lead to water scarcity in certain parts of the country in the future, says Zainura, who is Deputy Director at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia’s (UTM) Centre for Environmental Sustainability and Water Security (Ipasa).

Raising awareness is an essential prerequisite to improve water security, says Zainura.
