GUWAHATI: The state veterinary department has moved the home and political departments to impose a ban on the import of poultry in view of the outbreak of avian flu in the country. There is no immediate government move though to cull birds.
Assam imports chicken on a large scale from other parts of the country, especially eastern India. Chairman of the Assam Livestock and Poultry Corporation Ltd (ALPCL) Manoj Saikia said carrying poultry from eastern states to Assam should be stopped immediately. “Infected birds should not be allowed to come to the state for commercial purposes,” he said.

AGARTALA: Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb has warned the insurgents of a surgical strike over the kidnapping of three workers. Deb s warning comes after three construction workers were abducted by suspected National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) insurgents from Maldakumarpara, near the Indo-Bangla border in Dhalai district.

NEW DELHI: A United States firm has collaborated with Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) to manufacture nutraceuticals from turmeric Lakadong a special turmeric variety that grows in Meghalaya.
In this regard, Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday launched the famous Lakadong turmeric in the US through video conferencing.
On this occasion, Tomar praised the peasants of Meghalaya and said that the Centre stands with them shoulder-to-shoulder for the progress of the annadata (food provider) of the country. The Union Minister also assured all possible aid from the Central government for development of the Agricultural sector in the north-eastern States including Meghalaya.
