Acclaimed PBS Television Series POV Announces 34th Season

POV returns to PBS in July with its 34th season, a slate of films that reaffirm public media s vital role as a platform FOR THE PEOPLE and in sparking national dialogue. America s longest-running documentary series newest season follows artists, activists, elders, comedians, frontline workers and politicians across the globe as they navigate their personal stories and the larger histories under which they take shape.
The season kicks off with writer and comedian CJ Hunt s directorial debut, The Neutral Ground, on July 5. All films are accompanied by educational resources and will be available to stream on all PBS platforms, including PBS.org and the PBS Video App. Premieres continue through fall 2021, with primetime specials in early 2022.
Unapologetic received CIFF s Groundbreaker Award.
This year’s Cleveland International Film Festival includes a new honor, the Groundbreaker Award, celebrating the work of BIPOC filmmakers. This year’s award goes to Ashley O’Shay, for her film, “Unapologetic.”
The documentary tells the story of Janae and Bella, two Black, queer, women activists in Chicago fighting for police and justice reform in the aftermath of the police shootings of Laquan McDonald and Rekia Boyd.
Two Chicago shootings by police, one off duty and one on duty police officer. O Shay explained what she witnessed in the aftermath of both. Initially I was chronicling the organizing that was happening, specifically around Rekia Boyd because when the film started, it was the fall of 2015. And earlier that year, her killer Dante Servin, had basically deemed any sort of accountability via the court system, she said.

The Human Rights Watch Film Festival, now in its 32nd year, will present its second full digital edition of groundbreaking new films, available nationwide in the US from May 19 through 27, 2021.
