Yankees Add Andrew Heaney to Their Left-Handed Deadline Haul

July 30, 2021 Over the last few days, the Yankees addressed their surprisingly punchless and right-handed heavy lineup by adding Joey Gallo and Anthony Rizzo. In the waning minutes before the trade deadline, they struck a deal with the Angels to bring in another southpaw: left-handed pitcher Andrew Heaney. In exchange, New York will send a pair of pitching prospects to Los Angeles: Janson Junk and Elvis Peguero. Heaney is playing out the last year of team control before he hits free agency this offseason. Over the last four years, he’s posted a strikeout-to-walk ratio a touch under four, the 26th best mark among the 100 qualified starters during that period. Unfortunately, he’s struggled with a gigantic home run problem that has led to some ugly ERAs that far outpace his peripherals.

Aroldis Chapman, Chad Green, Zack Britton, Luis Cessa, and Lucas Luetge have all been taxed as the team reached into its depth to add some support during recent series against the Red Sox and Phillies. Short starts from Domingo Germán and Asher Wojciechowski combined with a somewhat rain-shortened Jordan Montgomery start last night to leave the bullpen so depleted that the inexperienced Brooks Kriske was put in a position to fail after Green’s blown save.

Yankees DFA Asher Wojciechowski, Select Sal Romano

MLB Trade Rumors The Yankees announced Thursday that they’ve selected the contract of righty Sal Romano from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and cleared a spot on the active and 40-man rosters by designating right-hander Wojciechowski, 32, was selected to the roster just yesterday and started last night’s game for the Yanks, holding the Phillies to a pair of runs on three hits and three walks with four strikeouts in four innings. That’ll prove to be little more than a spot start for the well-traveled Wojciechowski, who must now be traded, released or placed on outright waivers within the next week.
