Murphy: Higher wages would help NJ labor shortage as mask rules ease

View Comments BERGENFIELD Two months ago, the borough s Memorial Day Parade remained a nebulous proposition, tied up in the uncertain future of the coronavirus pandemic. But that didn t stop Bergenfield Mayor Arvin Amatorio from devising scenarios involving masks, no masks and various permutations of social distancing. We knew we could cancel it if we had to,   Amatorio said. But the town also had to be ready for the best-case scenario: lovely weather and free-ranging people and politicians. That s what Bergenfield got on Monday as hundreds turned out for the annual parade to honor U.S. veterans who died in service of their country. It fell just four days after Gov. Phil Murphy relaxed masking requirements for vaccinated residents across the state.

NJ still struggles to bridge racial gaps in COVID vaccine registration

Weeks after New Jersey began distributing COVID vaccines, Lynne Algrant got a call from Bergen New Bridge Medical Center.  The Paramus hospital, nestled in a county where minorities make up almost half the population, was struggling to sign up nonwhite patients for the shots. At the same time, Algrant, vice president of a Hackensack nonprofit that works with low-income families, was being peppered by calls from Black, Latino and Asian residents struggling to get coveted vaccines.  We thought we were going to be facing hesitancy, and we thought we were going to need to do a lot of community education, said Algrant, who works for Greater Bergen Community Action. What we found very quickly is that people couldn t find appointments and couldn t navigate the system.

Presented by Uber Driver Stories Good Tuesday morning! They say there’s always a Jersey connection. But it’s not always a good one. You’re likely aware that Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick, who died after the Jan. 6 assault on the Capitol, was a New Jersey native.
