On the ninth floor, Magaly Delgado, 80, a devout Catholic from Cuba with a love for lobster and Elvis Presley, was looking forward to traveling to Napa, Calif.
Seven floors below, Chaim “Harry” Rosenberg, a 52-year-old asset manager from Brooklyn who is Jewish, was thrilled to host his daughter, Malki, and her husband, Benny, from New Jersey. He had bought the apartment just a few months ago, and hoped the sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean would help clear his mind after losing his wife to brain cancer and both parents to COVID-19.
Leidy Vanessa Luna Villalba, 23, a nanny from rural Paraguay, had arrived on Wednesday with the sister of Paraguay’s first lady. It was her first trip abroad and she messaged her family on WhatsApp that she could not wait to explore the city and go to the beach.

SURFSIDE, Fla. Les secouristes ont creusé pour un cinquième jour dans les débris d’un immeuble en copropriété effondré en Floride en utilisant des machines lourdes pour travailler au sommet de l’immense tas de béton pulvérisé et d’acier tordu.
Les autorités ont estimé lundi qu’ils pouvaient encore retrouver des survivants dans les décombres, un espoir auquel les membres de familles de disparus se sont accrochés même si personne n’a été sorti vivant depuis les toutes premières heures après l’affaissement de la structure.
Deux autres corps ont été retrouvé lundi, portant le bilan officiel à 11 morts. Mais plus de 150 personnes sont toujours portées disparues à Surfside, près de Miami. Leurs familles ont pris des autocars dimanche vers un site voisin pour assister à l’intense effort de recherche et sauvetage, qui implique des pompiers, des chiens renifleurs et des experts en recherche qui utilisent des radars et des sonars.

SURFSIDE, Fla. (AP) â Rescue workers digging for a fifth day into the remnants of a collapsed Florida condo building stressed Monday that they could still find survivors in the rubble, a hope family members clung to even though no one has been pulled out alive since the first hours after the structure fell.
Another body was recovered overnight, bringing the confirmed death toll to 10. But more than 150 people are still missing in Surfside. Their families rode buses Sunday to a nearby site to watch the intense rescue effort, which included firefighters, sniffer dogs and search experts using radar and sonar devices.

SURFSIDE, Fla. - Families are anxiously waiting with hope as more than 150 people are still unaccounted for after a condo building collapsed in Surfside, Florida last week including a little girl with at least one parent presumed to be inside when the building fell.
Mayor Charles Burkett encountered her Sunday night. He spoke about the touching moment Monday during a news conference.
