Last week, Rep. Betty McCollum, a Democrat from Minnesota, and 15 co-sponsors introduced H.R.2407, entitled: “Promoting Human Rights for Palestinian Children Living Under Israeli Military Occupation Act.”
The long and seemingly innocuous title does not tell the full political story of the proposed legislation. Despite clarifications and explanations that it is not “conditioning U.S. aid to Israel” or has built-in sanctions, the text of the bill calls for increased supervision and accountability over military sales that Israel receives through generous U.S. aid.
It is very doubtful whether the bill will even come up for a vote. And if it somehow does, the chances of it passing are close to zero, evidenced by the fact that 331 members of the House of Representatives (75 percent) already signed an letter initiated by AIPAC objecting to it.
