LocalGov.co.uk - Your authority on UK local government - Power of local government eroded over decades, report concludes

Power of local government eroded over decades, report concludes Local authorities have seen a ‘steady erosion’ of their autonomy by central Government over the last four decades, a new report has concluded. Commissioned by the campaign group Unlock Democracy, ‘Local Government in England – 40 Years of Decline’ looks at the relationship between central and local Government. It also focuses on finance, services and representation. Written by members of the Local Governance Research Centre (LGRC) at De Montfort University Leicester, the report concluded that the balance between councils and Westminster has ‘increasingly tilted towards the centre, leaving local government and the communities it serves weakened.’
