40 Years for Frontier Mall: 1975-2015

The first announcement came on Sept. 14, 1973 with the News-Optimistreporting that an Edmonton firm was to develop the east mall. Construction of the $6,000,000 shopping complex with approximately 237,000 square feet of floor space was to start Sept. 19, 1973. The deal to build wasn’t without some controversy as there were two other firms looking at building there also. After an eight-and-a-half-month delay, during which time city council was bombarded with numerous requests to consider additional shopping center developments, a permit was finally issued. The permit allowed for the construction of a 260,000 square foot, 35-unit shopping plaza with a completion date of April 1, 1974. The mall was to contain, as anchors, a 67,000 square foot Woolworths store as well as a large Metropolitan store, an OK Economy supermarket and a Saan store. As it turned out, the completion date was moved forward to April – May 1975 as reported in another paper.

Provincial archives completes 2-year move to new centralized location

REGINA For the first time in decades, Saskatchewan’s entire provincial archives collection is under one roof. The move to the former CBC building in Regina took two years to complete. The CBC gave the building to the Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan for free to help with operating costs while leasing back a small portion. The broadcast studios were converted to storage space for 118,000 boxes of historic material. “It’s great. It’s a wonderful building. It’s huge. There’s lots of room,” Tim Novak, Archivist for the Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan said. “And now we have all of our records and all of our staff and services under one roof.”

Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan celebrates Archives Week

“Archives Week is a time to celebrate our province’s documentary history,” Minister Responsible for the Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan Jim Reiter said. “There are many ways that archival records are made available for all Saskatchewan citizens to enjoy and learn about our rich history.” The Archives invites the public to ‘tour’ the Permanent Collection through a video exploration of research spaces and storage areas, available on the Archives’ YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCxk8HJl3F7WkYM0MR2KDfWg. Archivists have added additional content on YouTube, including one-of-a-kind historic films, as well as interviews from a Heritage Saskatchewan Living Heritage video project entitled ‘COVID-19 Culture’.
