one for b.p. officials trying to stop gallons of oil gushing in the gulf every day. they re considering new options because the attempt to use 100-ton containment vessel failed. kris gutierrez is live in venice, louisiana, with more. hi, kris. reporter: hi, shannon. joining us live is curtis thomas with b.p. you are going to explain that the containment dome didn t work as you hoped yesterday but you are going to try to use it, correct? tell us. absolutely. we knew there would be a lot of challenges in the proposal. what happened is we lowered the dome over the leak and ice crystals built up, hydrates built up and it caused the dome to actually rise up. what we did was we moved it 200 meters off the leak and set it on the seabed floor again and we re thinking about several different options on how to overcompensate for the hydrate program. shannon reporter: i know all options are on the table but one thing that is interesting, the hydrates and crystals form a slushy i

rick atkinson, of course, is working on a trilogy publishing the first two books on the second world war and specifically the first volume on the american involvement in north africa and the second on the italian campaign which was a bloody affair. in doesn t get a lot of attention in history and obviously as those a lot more deserves a lot more. he is a luminous and writer. wonderful piece of history and a grave writing. but the book allen recommend for people who wanted to understand what went wrong in iraq is a book called fiasco by thomas ricks. he has written a sequel called the gamble but i haven t read that the fiasco is really what a great book in terms of peeling away what happened and iraq. and essentially the united states made some very critical mistakes before it even now. the first was the inadequacy of the troops that went into iraq which meant that while we could topple the regime we could not restore the line order and so when that occurred american troops
