It’s almost time to fling some fish: The Flora-Bama’s annual Interstate Mullet Toss opens Friday and runs through Sunday.
As the accompanying images illustrate, the central activity is a competition in which children, adults and local beach celebrities go for distance records as they fling small fish from Florida into Alabama. Between participants, spectators and collateral activity such as live music, the even tends to draw tens of thousands of people over the course of a weekend.
Last year’s event was among many threatened with cancellation as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Organizers were able to keep the annual tradition alive with a smaller fall event planned on short notice, but this weekend should bring a return to form.
