On April 30, 2021, Nebraska City will celebrate Arbor Day for the 150th time.
Originally proposed in 1872 by Nebraska City resident J. Sterling Morton as a day to focus on tree planting in a mostly barren state, Arbor Day has grown into an environmental powerhouse of a holiday, celebrated in all 50 states and in many countries around the world.
“Nebraskans have always been forward thinking and being the driving force behind a holiday like Arbor Day proves that,” said Nebraska City Tourism and Commerce Executive Director Amy Allgood. “The early residents of our state knew the importance of trees when it came to shade, shelter, and use for houses and furniture, and we’ve since built on that as we’ve learned about the environmental impact trees have.”
It s almost that time again, the City of Texarkana, TX has teamed up with the Texas A&M Forestry Service for the 7
th Annual Arbor Day tree giveaway. What better way to celebrate Arbor Day than by getting a free tree? It will all take place on Saturday, March 6
th. The event will begin at 9:00 a.m. at Spring Lake Park across from the Rotary Splash Pad and will extend until all trees are given away.
Just a heads up these trees go fast so get there early!
According to a press release, members of the City of Texarkana, Texas Planning and Community Development Department and the Texas A&M Forest Service will be on-hand to help give away 1,000 bare root seedlings. The public is invited to participate in the tree giveaway, however, due to COVID-19 those interested in obtaining trees will be asked to stay in their vehicle and a volunteer will bring the trees to you.
Another weekend, chock-full of fun events, is ahead for Lake County.
In Leesburg, the carnival is coming to town at the Lake Square Mall, while Mount Dora will host its annual Scottish Highland Festival. Eustis will commence with the 119th annual Georgefest coronation ball while Tavares and Clermont show their appreciation for Florida Arbor Day with tree giveaways.

It’s carnival time at the Lake Square Mall, 10401 US HWY 441 in Leesburg, which runs from 5 to 10 p.m. tonight, 5 to 11 p.m. Friday night, noon to 11 p.m. Saturday and noon to 10 p.m. Sunday.
