GOP senator defends Cheney, Murkowski after Trump rebuke

I want to always make sure we nominate somebody who can win in November. Lisa Murkowski knows Alaska better than anybody, and she s an incredible fighter for American energy. She hasn t made an announcement if she s even going to run again. If she does, I m going to support her, Barrasso said. With regard to Liz Cheney in Wyoming, we work closely together fighting the Biden administration, he added of his fellow Wyoming lawmaker.  So, I support her. I disagree with her completely on the issue of impeachment. She voted one way. I voted the other, he continued. His comments came in response to a statement the former president released this week after Murkowski broke with her party to vote for the confirmation of Rep. Deb Haaland

Kaine eyes next week to file censure aiming to bar Trump from future office

Kaine is still gathering input but has drafted a resolution that would formally censure Trump. It also includes provisions that would mirror language in Section 3 of the 14th Amendment on barring officials from holding future office.  In a way I view it as kind of censure-plus because it has these two factual findings that could have the same consequence as an impeachment conviction, Kaine said. It s not just, hey you did those things and that s bad.   ADVERTISEMENT Kaine added that the language in the resolution which he noted was technically a condemnation resolution would have practical consequences if Trump runs for office again, something he s flirted with.

Republicans wrestle over removing Trump

Romney, the only Republican senator to vote to convict Trump on an article of impeachment in February, accused Trump of inciting a mob of supporters to storm the Capitol while Congress was counting the vote of the Electoral College on Wednesday. Rep. Garrett Graves (R-La.) on Friday called for Trump to step back from the duties of his office, though he said he did not support impeaching the president or invoking the 25th Amendment. “He effectively needs to resign. And what I mean by that is, effectively, he will not be out there talking, speaking, wielding the full authority and power of the White House, maybe even technically finding a way to hand over the keys to [Vice President] Pence,” he said.

Pelosi: I like the 25th Amendment because it gets rid of Trump

The House leader also told 60 Minutes  that there is strong support among the members of Congress to see Trump impeached and rendered unable to run for office again. He can only pardon himself from federal offenses. He cannot pardon himself from state offenses, and that’s where he’s being investigated in the state of New York, Pelosi told CBS s Leslie Stahl. There is a possibility that after all of this, there’s no punishment, no consequence, and he could run again for president, Stahl countered. And that’s one of the motivations people have for advocating for impeachment, the Speaker responded. I like the 25th Amendment because it gets rid of him. He’s out of office. But there’s strong support in the Congress for impeaching the president a second time.
