Plantation stocks top gainers on Bursa after Indonesia banned palm oil exports

Plantation stocks on the local bourse dominated the top gainer list on Monday morning (April 25) as Indonesia’s move to ban palm oil exports is seen to benefit Malaysian planters. At the time of writing, Kuala Lumpur Kepong Bhd (KLK) was the top gainer by value, surging RM1.56 or 5.57% to RM29.56, followed by its 47.43%-owned associate Batu Kawan Bhd that jumped RM1.20 or 4.32% to RM29.

Challenges seen ahead for planters

PETALING JAYA: After enjoying the months-long rally that lifted crude palm oil (CPO) prices to a high that was last seen more than a decade ago, planters will need to brace themselves for a number of challenges ahead. While persistent low palm oil stock levels have been instrumental in pushing CPO prices above the RM4,000-per-tonne range, there are views the commodity may not be able to sustain its price momentum too long. Analysts are predicting palm oil production to recover strongly in the coming months, and as a result, boost planters’ inventories that would in turn exert pressure on CPO prices.

Stronger recovery path seen in automotive sector after vehicle sales tax exemption extended

KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 30): Analysts foresee a stronger recovery path for the automotive sector after the government announced a six-month extension to the new vehicle sales tax exemption until June 30, 2021. Kenanga Research’s analyst Wan Mustaqim Wan Ab Aziz upgraded the automotive sector to overweight from neutral as he envisaged stronger recovery in 2021 with total industry volume (TIV) target at 585,000 units. He opined that the news is a positive surprise for automakers and consumers which should prompt a buying frenzy over the next few months and relieve back-logged bookings. “We believe the new volume-driven launches in 4QCY20 (i.e. Proton X50, Honda City and Nissan Almera) could help improve consumer sentiment with back-logged bookings to overflow into 2021 and boosted by the extension of sales and services tax (SST) exemption, seasonal promotions and new launches in the 2H (second half) of the year,” he said.
