Swink High School student wins Congressional Art Competition

It was only the second watercolor 16-year-old Anella Navarro had ever painted. Since 1982, students across the nation have submitted entries into the Congressional Art Competition. Every year, each district chooses one area student to have their pieces displayed in the U.S. Capitol. Navarro, a student at Swink High School, is this year s winner for Colorado s 4th Congressional District. I wasn t very familiar with the medium . I had to mix my own colors, and it was more of a hard medium to control, so it was interesting, Navarro said. For entries into the Congressional Art Competition, Colorado students were asked to paint a watercolor that represented what the state meant to them. While Navarro may have been fairly new to watercolor painting, her art teacher at Swink, Max Cordova, recognized her talents and encouraged her to enter.
