Music club operators, theater owners and others in the live-event market have been waiting nearly four months for a $16 billion federal grant fund for their industry to start taking applications. Their hopes were briefly raised two weeks ago, when the program’s application website opened then dashed as a technical malfunction prevented the site from accepting any applications.

It was an extremely hot day on 8 November last year in northern KwaZulu-Natal so hot that it killed at least 110 birds and fruit bats. Staff at the Phongolo Nature Reserve found large numbers of dead and dying birds, mostly songbirds, around the reserve’s headquarters, while Wahlberg’s epauletted fruit bats were found dead in Pongola itself and Hluhluwe.

Mail & Guardianreported how dozens of birds and bats perished on that scorching day when temperatures reached an unusual 40°C by 10am and climbed to a searing 45°C.

During a year when the TV industry is worried about how many viewers will return to watch ABC’s annual Oscars broadcast, Verizon will definitely return to advertise during it.
The telecommunications giant will sponsor the ceremony for the fourth consecutive year, and not just with TV commercials. Verizon will make available three different “5G portals” that viewers can seek out via social media and their mobile devices that will give them behind-the-scenes access to the red carpet; the press area where winners and presenters talk to the media; and, for a smaller set, an engraving station where winners get to put their name on their award.
