It took only a handful of seconds for a gun battle between a Jacksonville police officer and suspect to occur Monday afternoon in the 1000 block of Line Street, the Sheriff s Office s director said.
When the gunfire stopped, amazingly neither Officer Joseph Ledyard or the gunman now identified as Luis Alberto Ceballos Rodriguez had been hit by the fusillade that lasted three seconds, Director Mike Bruno said.
But as Rodriguez fled the scene, multiple bullet holes were left behind, piercing the driver s window and fenders of the police cruiser Ledyard had just exited with gun drawn. Within just a handful of seconds, the driver begins shooting at our officer. The officer is able to return fire while taking cover, Bruno said. . For someone to have total disregard for the officer and what he is trying to do and everyone else in that community, it should outrage the community. It s senseless.
