Dr Ananabai Joshee studied at the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania, later the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania, and dedicated her career to treating women. Sadly, she died too young. Anandibai Joshee graduated from Woman s Medical College of Pennsylvania (WMC) in 1886. Seen here with Kei Okami (center) and Sabat Islambooly (right).

Dr Anandabai Gopal Joshee was not only the first Indian woman to receive a Western medical degree, but also the first known Hindu woman to travel to America.
She hailed from Kalyan in Maharashtra, but travelled to the US to study medicine at the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania, later the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania, which was the first medical school in the world established (in 1850) to train women as medical doctors.
